Today is blog’s WordPress birthday!
May 8, 2009 by Pam
The blog is tipsy on champagne today (it decided to drink the keg early.) It’s very happy that it’s been on WordPress for one whole year today. The first official blog entry, on May 8, 2008, was that that the blog was under construction. The fascinating commentary unofficially began the next day.
As I mentioned when this blog moved from Yahoo 360 to WordPress, I was fed up with Yahoo. I’d write something and some days it would show up on the blog, some days it wouldn’t. Sometimes the blog archive wouldn’t load, or it would load minus an entry or two. But the thing that really irritated me was that the tag cloud froze. New tags wouldn’t be added and additional tag entries wouldn’t appear larger. Yahoo kept claiming that they were going to do something, and I think they tried some half-hearted new platform, but it didn’t stick and now it appears that they are focused on profiles, i.e. Facebook style, with no blog. Not surprisingly, these actions were unacceptable to me. So I tried Blogger. I don’t exactly remember (it’s been so long!) what I didn’t like, but the templates seemed inflexible to me. And then, on May 8, I typed wordpress.com into my browser for the first time.
I was thrilled. The home page looked professional. There were a lot of themes to choose from, and scrolling through them took about a day. But most of all, there was a tag cloud! So the blog is very tipsy today on the champagne. It’s very happy and comfortable here (it slurred it to me just now) and feels at home. WordPress was made for bloggers and the company takes it seriously.
As mentioned last month, the blog is actually terrible two and eight days today. But I consider this a bigger birthday, worthy of champagne. In honor of the Star Trek opening today, Live Long and Prosper, blog!
