Longing for the desert…
April 30, 2009 by Pam
I think I need to rename this blog Weather disappointment and its effects on the mind. Chicago weather is just unbelievable. I know other areas get two feet of snow dumped on them or have 75 degrees dewpoints, but this place gets it all. I even saw hail a couple of weeks ago. We had a lot of snow (53 inches) this year, not quite as bad as last year’s 60, but not by much. At least last year there was no ice dam because we didn’t stay below freezing for a month. This year we did and water came in, with me not getting any sleep one night because I had to keep dumping out the water containers on the window sill throughout the night. Fun memory. Now it’s rain, and of course as I sit here typing this entry, it’s raining…again. Farmers can’t plant. I have a growing grass jungle I can’t mow because the ground is too soggy. Next up, mosquitos…and humidity.
That’s why I’m longing for the desert. Sure, Phoenix gets up to 110s and you need air conditioning, but after 53 inches of snow, hail, an ice dam, basement floods, and skating-rink alleys, I’ll take it. And I will get it in two weeks from tomorrow. I am so looking forward to going back to Phoenix and sitting in a jacuzzi with a good friend, a to-be-determined alcoholic beverage, and stars twinkling above.
I hate to say it, but as the birthdays increase, Phoenix looks better and better. At least I’ll get a dose of it soon. Maybe some tubing. Can’t wait.
