Commentary heaven…

As a birthday gift, I got a subscription to Netflix from two friends. Slowly but surely, I’ve been working through my list – mainly classics and independent films I can’t normally get. One of the pluses of renting old movies from the 50s, 60s, and 70s is getting a commentary from the director who is [...]

I had bookmarked the Techdirt (a tech consulting firm) blog and hadn’t looked at in awhile. Shame on me. When I initially bookmarked it, it looked like an intelligent, not too jargony blog about how technology and the internet are evolving. I just looked at it this morning and got smart  – I RSSed it to [...]

As of 15 minutes ago, 6:59 CDT, summer officially showed up. Yay. That means the first snowflake is three and half months or so away. I guess I better enjoy the humidity while I can…

Unfortunately, I was wrong. According the Gazette, probably all of the adult library books, magazines, and reference books on the 1st floor of the library will have to be replaced. Mold is everywhere (given the library’s proximity to the river, I guess that should be expected.)

The Cedar Rapids main library is closed indefinately. The water went up four shelf levels on the main floor, but the the librarian said most of the books were ok. The Vinton courthouse has reopened. I haven’t seen anything about its internal condition. I suspect the basement got water, but I think the actual river [...]

Paternity…

My relationship with my father was not very good. He was extremely critical of everything I did. If I didn’t see things his way, there was something wrong with me. If I let the dog out and she barked, it was my fault. I could go on and on. But I think that’s enough. He’s gone [...]

What happens now?

What will happen to Cedar Rapids? Who could have ever dreamed it would be looking like New Orleans after Katrina?! I suppose a river can always flood, but it always seemed to me when I went over the bridges that there was a lot of room between the bridge and the water. I’m sure in [...]

Somehow, I don’t think people there are celebrating the river right now. It looks pretty bad. The library is barely a block from the river and it’s evacuated. Buildings east of the river in downtown are getting hit. Power’s out. Boy, do I feel for everyone there.
I also feel for the people of Vinton, [...]
